Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus
In the front garden last night. Norwich - July 2022
I went out to look at this evening's Pink Moon and instead got distracted by a rustling in the garden. Delighted to find this individual. A bit camera shy but that's fine, I didn't want to scare the animal. One quick picture and then leave the hog to it. Norwich - April 2020
Completely unexpected, December the 6th and there's a hedgehog in my front garden! Not only that, it was a very small individual with a head injury. Time for action!
Transferred to a box and brought indoors. Given some Happy Shopper cat food (39p!), some drinking water and a water bottle filled with hot water. Several hours later...
Feeling better but still in need of proper medical attention, the hedgehog was collected by Liz from Hallswood Animal Sanctuary, hopefully to make a full recovery. Liz estimated the weight at approximately 380g. Hedgehogs need to be at least 600g to hibernate. It's very apparent from this final picture how much the hedgehog needed the warmth from the hot water in the bottle. I refilled it several times to ensure it stayed warm enough to have an effect. The hedgehog clung to it all afternoon and evening.
I didn't anticipate being called upon to care for a hedgehog in December. While I was delighted to find that there are still hedgehogs in this area, it was more worrying to find one underweight, ill and injured in December.

This unfortunate individual had tumbled into the skylight for the cellar of one of the houses on the Cathedral Close. However, it was being very well cared for and plans were laid for it to spend the rest off the day undercover and then be released later in the evening to continue foraging. Rösrath, Nord Rhein-Westphalia - very telling that the only hedgehog I've seen since stting up the website was in Germany.
