I saw this individual catch the butterfly, fly round removing various parts and then settle to eat. The victim appears to be either a Meadow Brown or a Gatekeeper. Eaton Marsh, Norwich - July 2023

This individual caused some debate. It seems to be lacking the diagnostic yellow triangle on the second abdominal segment. However, it also lacks the costa which would have made it a Common Hawker. Enter the expert! The angle of the shot is quite tricky but it lacks the yellow costa on the wings. The small central spots on each abdomen segment are less angular on Migrant Hawker than Common Hawker, also the spots at the base of each segment are bigger in Common Hawker. They are also surrounded by a dark patch in Migrant Hawker (as in your picture). This darker area in Migrant Hawker becomes larger from segment 8 onwards making the abdoment appear increasingly darker towards the end. Migrant Hawker also a broad dark central line running down the abdomen as evident in your picture. Thanks to Paul Hopkins for the puzzling out this tricky identification.
