Super Worm Moon
The Evening Standard provided the most succinct explanation for this phenomenon:
A supermoon happens only when a full moon aligns with the point closest to the earth in the moon's elliptical orbit, known as the perigee.
During this time, the moon will appear 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than usual as it reaches its closes point to Earth. A Worm Moon is simply the term used by ancient Native American tribes and Europeans for a full moon that lands in March. ie. the ground is warming up and worms start to reappear.
I had no idea that this was occurring, I was just impressed by the moon on Wednesday evening. If I had known I'd have made more of an effort and got the tripod out. As it is, this is a hand held photograph showing a thin band of cloud across the moon taken from my back garden at 18:46.
